It’s perfectly normal to be nervous before your procedure here at Dental Implants and Periodontology of Arizona. We understand, and we see it every day! If you are feeling nervous, let us know so that we can help.
In most cases, a fear of the dentist can be overcome without too much intervention. Our friendly staff and comfortable office make most patients feel at ease as soon as they come in the door. However, there are cases where that’s simply not enough.
For those cases of moderate to severe dental anxiety, we recommend dental sedation. Sedation dentistry has changed the way people approach their dental appointments, and we hope that you can have a similarly peaceful experience.
Dental fear and anxiety often stem from previous experiences that were less than satisfactory. Unfortunately, there are a lot of dentists out there who just don’t care about the comfort of their patients. Many of our current patients come into the office with horror stories about what they have experienced. It’s no wonder they are afraid. Dental sedation can help these patients overcome their fears and learn to relax at the dentist office once again.
Oral conscious sedation is sedation in pill form. A quick medical history will help us determine if sedation is best for you. If it is, you will receive a prescription to take to your pharmacy. You will receive a medication (or combination) to take prior to your appointment. We ask that you have someone drive you to and from your appointment. You might also ask this person to stay with you while you rest after your procedure.
Oral conscious sedation takes about an hour to really kick in. Once it does, you will feel completely at ease. Many of our patients can actually take a nap throughout their procedure. You will be relaxed, but we will be able to communicate with you as need be. The sedation will still be in effect for a couple of hours after your procedure, so be sure you plan accordingly.
Dental sedation is not for everyone. Not everyone is comfortable taking a sedative, and some medical conditions make sedation difficult. If you are unsure, please bring it up at your next appointment or give us a call so that we can discuss your options. We want to make sure that you are comfortable, but your health comes first.
In addition to dental sedation, we also offer other comfort options. We provide comfortable chairs and private operatories to help patients relax. In addition, we make sure that you never feel rushed when you are in the office. Longer appointments are a norm here so you know that you are heard and respected by our staff. You can also request a comfortable eye mask to wear during your procedure to encourage relaxation.
