If you haven’t been to the dentist office in a while, it might seem like you are the only one in the world. People don’t like to talk about skipping their cleanings, but you are definitely not alone! Many of our new patients have been away from the dentist for a decade or longer and are now sitting in our office as a consequence.
Because we see so many patients who have been avoiding the dentist for years, we have ways to make sure that you have a comfortable, effective appointment. Our staff is fantastic, and our office feels just like home! We even have Tempur-Pedic patient chairs in our operatories to help you relax. These are just a few ways we can make your first appointment more comfortable to help you relieve your dental anxiety.
Your first appointment is very important to you and to Dr. Komarnyckyj. Our goal is to find out exactly what is going on in your mouth and what we can do to help you have a healthier, happier smile. We’ll begin with an exam. Dr. Komarnyckyj will find out more about your pain, desires for your smile, and what has been keeping you from seeking treatment until now.
Dr. Komarnyckyj will do a visual oral cancer screening and will then ask for some images of your mouth. We will take X-rays and photos of your teeth and jaw, and that will be the end of your first visit! We’ll call you back soon after to go over the results of your exam and images taken. Dr. Komarnyckyj will have a good idea of what kind of treatment will be a success for your smile.
For many of our patients, especially those who haven’t been to the dentist in a decade or more, the first step in treatment is a dental deep cleaning. Ordinarily, you would have a cleaning every three months to remove the plaque that builds up along the gumline. If you’ve been avoiding those visits, the plaque is now deep below the gums and needs to come out!
We often use a perioscope when we do a deep cleaning. A perioscopy is a small camera attached to fiber optic lights that we can fit below the gums. This is our set of eyes during your deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing. The perioscopy treatment allows us to see and remove all of the plaque below the gums without having to pull the tissue away from your teeth. In other words, no surgery is required!
